Welcome to Resist!
A message from Jasmine Gomez, Resist’s Director of Radical Philanthropy.
Resist has always been a different type of foundation.
Our story begins in 1967 when the “Call to Resist Illegitimate Authority” was issued to support draft resistance in opposition to the war in Vietnam. Since then, Resist has provided critical early funding to some of the most influential progressive organizations in the United States – many of which have gone on to make history themselves.
In recent years, we have witnessed an uprising against police, courageous workers unionizing at predatory corporations like Amazon and Starbucks, and Indigenous groups fighting against the devastating effects of climate change and for land back. Across the country and around the world as a recession looms, budgets tighten, and prices surge, poor and working-class Black and Brown people are bearing the brunt of capitalism’s compounding crises.
As 2022 came to an end, we looked forward to 2023 and remained hopeful. Hopeful that in spite of these interlocking crises, our grantees will continue to organize with and on behalf of those most impacted by oppression. Hopeful that we will keep witnessing historic victories as frontline communities fearlessly lead the resistance, reimagine what’s possible, and build a new future for all of us.
Nationally, only 8% of grant-making dollars go to groups led by communities most impacted by systemic oppression in the United States. For Resist, this number is 100%. All of the funds we raise go towards grassroots groups that are resisting, reimagining, and building resilience in their communities and all across the country.
While we may not be able to outspend big philanthropy, thanks to the generosity of our donors, we moved more resources in 2022 to our grantees than we ever have in our 56-year history.
That’s what makes our movement so exceptional—our togetherness is a bond that means we are never alone in our commitment for a better world.
Alone, we fight, but together, we win. Thank you for your continued support.
In solidarity and with hope,
Resist Staff Collective
Our History
Our story begins in 1967 when the “Call to Resist Illegitimate Authority” was issued to support draft resistance in opposition to the war in Vietnam. Signed by over 20,000 people, the Call mobilized activists and academics across the country and became a central document in the 1968 conspiracy trial of the “Boston Five”. Read more here.
2022 Grantee List
In 2022, Resist redistributed over $760,000 to 130+ frontline groups making the impossible possible. Check out the list of grantees here.
Resist Projects
One of our organizational principles is emergence. When we came across adrienne maree brown’s book Emergent Strategy in 2017, we were really moved by her work and it deeply resonated with our budding practices of experimentation. Since then, we’ve continued to sharpen and strengthen our experimentation muscle.
