Resist White Supremacy Everyday, Everywhere

"In every age, no matter how cruel the oppression carried on by those in power, there have been those who struggled for a different world. I believe this is the genius of humankind, the thing that makes us half divine: the fact that some human beings can envision a world that has never existed." – Anne Braden

Dear Resist Community,
As an organization led by, comprised of, and accountable to communities of color, immigrants, Muslims, Jews, and white allies who are deeply committed to racial justice, we are shaken by the violent terrorism committed by white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia.
But to be honest, none of us are that surprised.
We are not surprised because the communities that we are a part of and that we support experience the violence of racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and anti-semitism every single day. We read about it in grant applications, we hear about it from the groups we fund, and experience it as individuals and as a community.
We know, witness, and feel the socially unacceptable violence of white supremacy like what we see in Charlottesville. But we also are directly impacted by the insidiously violent yet 'acceptable' ways white supremacy invades communities every single day: police brutality, racial and religious profiling, the school to prison pipeline, the War on Terror, lack of health care, housing, and education, ecological destruction of indigenous lands, and our immoral anti-immigration system to sadly name just a few.
And of course we know that this country was founded on white supremacy: the genocide of indigenous people and the violent robbery of their land and the brutal enslavement of Africans and the stealing of their labor to build this country. And that legacy continues to haunt us till this day.
But this is not all we know. As much as white supremacy is interwoven into the fabric of this country, so is the unwavering movement against it.
People are dying and people are suffering. And despite all of the blood and terror, there have always been prophetic communities that, as the white southern anti-racist activist Anne Braden put it, could "envision a world that has never existed."
We are proud to say that the groups that Resist funds and supports are envisioning this world, tearing down the old one, and building the new one.
And that is why in times likes these we find ourselves holding deep gratitude for the brave and courageous souls who through this violence, can still stand up, protect, imagine, hope for, and fight for a better world.
We stand with you – the communities that are resisting white supremacy everywhere and everyday. As always, we are here to support you in this long struggle.
With anger, sadness, and the deepest of love,
The Resist Staff
